World Sea Turtle Day was celebrated in Loreto with the 1st Forum on Sea Turtle Conservation Outreach on June 21st, with a collaboration between Eco-Alianza de Loreto, UABCS Campus Loreto, the Loreto City Council, and the Regional Center for Normal Education. Sea turtles are fundamental species for marine ecosystems, and their conservation is crucial to ensure the health and diversity of our oceans, as well as the well-being of communities dependent on them. Despite their importance, these species remain vulnerable and are protected under different risk categories.

Dr. Wallace J. Nichols

With deep respect and admiration, we dedicated the "Sea Turtle Conservation Outreach Forum" in memory of our good friend Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, who focused his life to the protection of these magnificent marine animals. His passion and commitment continue to inspire us, even after his departure. Dr. Nichols was a pioneer in marine science and a tireless advocate for ocean conservation. His legacy lives on in our work and in the generations he has inspired to care for and preserve our oceans. Let us follow his example and work together for a sustainable future for all marine species. Rest in peace, Dr. Wallace J. Nichols. Education is a core value of Eco-Alianza. By providing youth with an experiential and intellectual understanding of the value of our Loreto environment, we have implemented a foundation for generations of safeguarding and protection. This March, we participated in the “Kid Wind Challenge.” This hands-on design challenge engages student teams that design, construct and test small scale wind turbines and solar structures at events all over the world. Four of our high-school students earned top honors for their wind energy generator prototype, securing a coveted spot in the upcoming world competition in Minnesota, USA this May.

With air temperatures hitting the high 90s this week, one has to admit that our mild Loreto spring has slipped away. While the afternoons feel steamy, the warm nights are a bit of heaven for outdoor dining and evening walks. Loreto beaches are filled from afternoon into the rise of moon behind Carmen with children splashing in the warm water and the spread of family picnics on the sand. Volleyball games pop up at the north end of the Malecon, and kids chase one another on scooters up and down the waterfront. There’s a sense of happiness permeating the air.
