Eco-Alianza de Loreto and the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) are continuing their successful partnership through AguaEd: Water Stewardship Through Bilingual STEM Education, an innovative, place-based program that brings UC Davis students into middle school classrooms in Loreto, Baja California Sur.
Through interactive, hands-on STEM activities taught in Spanish, AguaEd brings science directly into students’ own environment. Lessons focus on water conservation, environmental stewardship, and scientific literacy, helping students understand one of the most pressing issues facing the region: the availability and protection of freshwater.
Now entering its third edition, AguaEd runs September 7–18, engaging students in classroom lessons and field-based experiences on water sustainability, hydrology, environmental health, and responsible use. Students investigate where Loreto’s water comes from, how it moves through natural systems, how contamination occurs, and — most importantly — what they can do to protect it.
The program is led by M.Sc. Susann Barbara Pinter, Academic Coordinator and Lecturer with the CalTeach/MAST Program at UC Davis. Under her leadership, AguaEd has grown into a meaningful model of international collaboration, strengthening ties among UC Davis, Eco-Alianza, local schools, and Loreto families.
The benefits flow in both directions. Loreto students gain firsthand experience with science as a tool for understanding and protecting the place they call home. UC Davis students gain teaching and cross-cultural experience that prepares them to work in community-centered, culturally responsive classrooms.
For Eco-Alianza, water conservation remains a critical priority. In an arid region where freshwater is both limited and precious, education is essential to long-term stewardship. Programs like AguaEd help turn awareness into understanding, and understanding into action — building a generation better prepared to safeguard Loreto’s water for the future.
A Night to Celebrate What We Love
For 19 years, Eco-Alianza has worked to protect the natural resources that make Loreto such a unique place. Along the way, we have learned that everything is connected: our seas, our coastlines, our ecosystems, our community, and, at the heart of it all, the water that makes life possible.
This year, we are celebrating what we have accomplished together while also looking ahead. The natural resources we cherish will only remain for generations to come if we continue working together to protect them. Of course, a celebration wouldn’t be complete without a little fun! Join us for a delicious dinner prepared by the La Misión Hotel team, a live auction, and music and dancing to close out the night. Join us November 14, 2026, at 5 p.m. on the Fifth Floor of La Misión Hotel as we celebrate 19 years of conservation, community, and commitment to Loreto.
