Utah State visit
Utah State University Launches Long-Term Marine Ecology Research in Loreto Bay National Park
In May 2026, Eco-Alianza welcomed Dr. Trisha Atwood, Dr. Julie Young, Dr. Edd Hammill, Dr. T.J. Clark-Wolf, and 15 students from Utah State University for the inaugural Sea of Cortez Marine Ecology Expedition Course.
Designed to immerse students in hands-on field research, the course marks the beginning of a five-year study to establish ecological baselines and monitor changes within Loreto Bay National Park. The expedition brought together Utah State University, Eco-Alianza, Dr. Luis Moreno of UABCS La Paz, and staff from Loreto Bay National Park in a collaborative effort to support long-term conservation and scientific monitoring.
Working across Coronado, Danzante, Carmen, and Monserrate Islands, students conducted fish transect surveys, hermit crab population studies, and drone monitoring of pelican nesting colonies. Data collected over the coming years will contribute to regional research efforts and help evaluate the effectiveness of marine conservation strategies.
“The students are really excited to think that their data could help the Marine Park,” said Dr. Trisha Atwood. “That’s not something we get to experience everywhere. Here, it feels like the work can truly make a difference.”
For many students, the experience extended beyond science.
“The connection between humans and the world around us is incredibly vital to conservation,” said student Bee Pickering. “Being in the field reminds you that we are part of a greater whole and have a responsibility to protect those that do not have a voice of their own.”

The course is part of a growing partnership between Eco-Alianza and Utah State University, inspired by the vision of Eco-Alianza co-founder and Utah State alumnus Anthony “Tony” Kinninger. “We definitely think Tony’s spirit traveled with us,” said Dr. Atwood.
Coordinating a five-day expedition for 25 participants on remote islands required extensive planning and teamwork. Faculty praised the support provided by Eco-Alianza staff, particularly Michelle Higuera, who helped lead logistics and field operations.
“Michelle did an unbelievable job keeping everything on schedule,” said Dr. Clark-Wolf. “She is an all-star employee. The food was also fantastic.”
On May 15, students and faculty presented their findings to the community at Eco-Alianza and shared their preliminary results with Loreto Bay National Park staff. Plans are already underway for next year’s expedition, with permits being prepared to support at least five years of continued research.
The visit also included a community beach cleanup, birdwatching excursions, and visits to San Javier and Rancho Las Parras, giving students a deeper connection to the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
“The students loved it,” said Dr. Atwood. “Many arrived knowing very little about Baja California Sur. They left inspired by its beauty, its biodiversity, and the opportunity to contribute to its conservation.”
“A Special Night Under the Stars”
The Loreto Environmental Film Series returned with two unforgettable nights of inspiration, reflection, and connection with nature. Through deeply moving stories, the community had the opportunity to engage with the challenges and efforts involved in protecting our ecosystems and strengthening environmental awareness.
The event featured two special screenings: The Last Dive, directed by Cody Sheehy, and The Whale’s Journey, by Franco Campos-López Benyunes. During the screening of The Last Dive, attendees also had the opportunity to hear from Terry Kennedy, creating a meaningful and engaging dialogue about conservation, art, and the role society plays in protecting nature.
Each evening welcomed more than 130 attendees, reflecting the community’s strong interest in cultural and environmental spaces like these. In addition to promoting environmental awareness, the event also helped raise funds to continue supporting Eco-Alianza’s conservation, environmental education, and community engagement programs. We sincerely thank Baja Productions, Magen Entertainment, Rhumbline Media, and everyone who helped make these two evenings of film and reflection possible.
