The City of Loreto is currently in the process of updating its Subregional Urban Development Plan. Eco-Alianza de Loreto has maintained a constant participation in each of the discussion groups convened by the City Council of Loreto and FONATUR.

The topic related to water has been one of the areas with the most citizen participation, given the current problem of drought and overexploitation of the aquifer that the region faces. Without water there is no life or development, so the sustainable management of this resource is a priority for Eco-Alianza. The need to implement strategies that not only guarantee supply, but also promote the conservation and responsible use of water, especially in times of climate crisis, has been discussed.

L.C.P. Carlos Posadas Solano, Executive Director of Eco-Alianza, has addressed the need to strengthen public policies around environmental education and citizen participation, ensuring that collective commitment is essential to face the challenges posed by water scarcity. Ing. Hugo Maldonado Quintero, one of Eco-Alianza’s Co- founders and member of the Board of Directors attended the urban planning meetings, with a key focus on our water crisis.

A link to his analysis, “How Loreto’s Subregional Urban Plan Must Evolve “ can be found here.

“Loreto’s future growth demands a thoughtful and sustainable approach from all of us. Our current dependence on the San Juan aquifer is no longer sustainable in the short term. And without the implementation of urgent changes to urban development, the city of Loreto is heading towards a serious water crisis, which will only worsen existing inequalities.”

Ing. Hugo Quintero Maldonado has emphasized the importance of investing in infrastructure for the proper and efficient distribution of water, as well as in the creation of rainwater harvesting systems that allow mitigating the effects of drought. For his part, M.C. Yvo Arias Salorio, President of the Board of Directors, has stressed the importance of planning urban growth in harmony with local ecosystems, proposing solutions that include the rehabilitation of natural water sources.

Throughout the meetings, various alternatives have been explored, such as the use of innovative technologies for the reuse of water, as well as the creation of alliances with international organizations and experts in the subject that can provide advice and financing for long-term projects.

The general consensus has been that the future of urban development in the region must necessarily be linked to a sustainability approach, with water as a central resource. The working groups will continue to advance the design of concrete actions to ensure that future generations can enjoy a more resilient Loreto with access to the natural resources it needs to prosper.
