Eco-Alianza Expands its Educational Outreach

UC Davis Exchange Program in Loreto

Teachers from University of California, Davis (UC Davis) spent two weeks in Loreto this September, participating in a unique pilot program focused on water science education at Modesto Sánchez Mayón Secondary School in Loreto.  The program is a collaboration between the Loreto schools, non-profit Eco-Alianza, and the UC Davis CalTeach/MAST program. The inter-cultural program was the brainchild of Susann Barbara Pinter, the Academic Coordinator of the CalTeach/MAST which provides students with training, internships, and other opportunities to explore careers in mathematics and science education. can ensure a better future for Loreto.

The goal of this program is to promote education in a community facing critical water-supply challenges, an issue of extreme importance for the municipality and its citizens. Already, the exchange has proven successful in improving education in Loreto and strengthening cultural and professional ties between California and Mexico. The students’ experiences, as reflected in the exit surveys, highlight the program’s positive impact on developing their pedagogical and intercultural skills. This program has the potential to be replicated with other universities, enriching students, teachers, and the Loreto community, promoting collaboration that benefits all involved. In 2025, we will welcome visits from other universities and continue creating these alliances that greatly benefit our community. With mutual support and collaboration, we can ensure a better future for Loreto.
