Litter Clean-up along the Carretera

North Entrance to Loreto Bay

Eco-Alianza’s Volunteer Task Force will team up with the Nopoló Association of Property Owners as well as Loreto Bay homeowners for a highway litter clean-up the morning of March 7. No need to sign up in advance – just show up at 8 a.m. at the big orange Fonatur sculpture at the north entrance to Loreto Bay. Wear sturdy shoes, brightly colored clothing, a hat, and sturdy gloves if you have them. Feel free to bring a drink or a snack – we do take breaks, and we will be finished before 11. Visiting Scientist Presentation on Chocolate Clams

As part of Eco-Alianza's Visiting Scientist program, Ph.D. candidate Kara Pellowe will discuss her research on the biological processes of chocolate clams and the social impacts of Loreto's chocolate clam fishery. The bilingual program is free and open to the public, and will be presented Thursday, April 4, at 5:00 p.m. at Eco-Alianza's CenCoMA headquarters in the upstairs auditorium. Kara holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University in the Science of Natural and Environmental Systems. She also earned dual Masters degrees in Biology and Sociology from Brown University, and is pursuing a Ph.D. in the Ecology and Environmental Sciences Program at the University of Maine. Visiting Scientist Presentation

Mangrove Roots Photo courtesy of Richard Jackson/Richard Jackson Photography Later this month we will continue Eco-Alianza’s Visiting Scientist series with a very special guest, David Borbón, a commercial fisherman from the community of El Delgadito, located on the Mexican Pacific coast within the Biosphere Reserve of El Vizcaíno. For more than eight years he undertook the challenge of recovering the red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle), and successfully achieved the reforestation of a large area in his community. His free presentation will take place February 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Eco-Alianza’s CenCoMA headquarters in downtown Loreto. Come learn more from David about the importance of preserving mangroves and our wetlands as a continuing celebration of International Wetlands Day.  

3rd Annual One Ocean Film Festival

Postponed until October 16 / 17! Join us in celebrating the Ocean with two evenings of feature films, shorts, and presentations by filmmakers. This year’s lineup includes the Loreto premiere of Sea Lion Rescue by Emmy-award-winning cinematographer Johnny Friday, who will take questions after the screening. His new film documents the efforts of dedicated naturalists and veterinarians working in the Bay of La Paz. Screenings of all films are under the stars in the Eco-Alianza courtyard, and include free popcorn! Eco-Alianza resumes the very popular "Visiting Scientist" talks with the Loreto Community. The first edition of 2022, is a presentation of the book "Loreto, Mexico: Challenges for a Sustainable Future '', by Paul Ganster, Ph.D., author of numerous articles, chapters of books, and edited works related to the border region. Introducing Eco-Alianza's first Visiting Scientist presentation under the CEMA program that supports international environmental research and education in the Loreto region and the entire Gulf of California. The presentations will be in Spanish, but the scientists are bilingual if you need translation. You will have an opportunity to meet Lorena M. Durán Riveroli, Ph.D., Department of Marine Biotechnology, CICESE, Ensenada, Baja California, and Allan Cembella, Ph.D. , Professor of Ecological Chemistry, (Institution name?). During their one week stay in Loreto, Drs. Durán and Cembella will be conducting marine research in the Bay of Loreto National Park, hosted and facilitated by Eco-Alianza in collaboration with Park staff. Sea Turtle Research

As part of the celebration for World Turtle Day, we invite to join us this coming Friday, May 20th at 06:30 p.m. for the International Forum of Women Scientists. This forum is part of our on-going initiative of Visiting Scientist Presentations.  Friday’s forum will focus on scientific research of sea turtles, and address topics such as monitoring sea turtles in feeding grounds, nesting of sea turtles in Loreto Bay National Park and patterns of green turtle movement in Southern California. In addition, there will be a video presentation, “Fishing and Conservation of Sea Turtles in the Central Desert of Baja California”. Don't miss it!!
